Swansea is a fantastic place all year round, but it really shines throughout the summer months. Whether you’re planning to spend your break from university in the city or you’re heading down to visit, there are so many must-visit outdoor attractions to keep you busy!
The rain and wind calm down during the summer months, so it’s a great opportunity to get at one with the great outdoors, we’ve put together our top places to visit…
1. Three Cliffs Bay
Three Cliffs Bay is a bay on the south coast of the Gower Peninsula in Swansea. The bay takes its name from the three sea cliffs that are on the bay. The stunning beach is a great place for visitors to sunbathe (if the weather allows!) or just for a stroll. The beach also has Blue Flag status, which means it complies with a specific set of criteria relating to water quality, information provision, environmental education, safety and environmental management. The good news is dogs are allowed on the beach all year round too!
2. Penllergare Valley Woods
The deeply magical Penllergare Valley Woods is located just minutes from Junction 47 of the M4. It is a great place for those with an interest in history and the arts as the Victorian estate was previously the home of John Dillwyn Llewelyn the renowned horticulturist, pioneering photographer and astronomer! The ground itself consists of a hundred hectares of mixed woodland, two lakes, seven miles of peaceful woodland walks and over five hundred years of Welsh history – so plenty for you to explore and enjoy! The site is also known for its spectacular waterfall on the River Llan, which meanders through the estate.
3. Gower Peninsula
The Gower Peninsula is another absolutely stunning place to visit in Swansea! It is a rich and varied environment - from wild moors and dramatic limestone cliffs to gorgeous sandy beaches. If you’re into geology, Gower is spot on with its inspiring landscapes and captivating coastline.
4. Oxwich Bay
Oxwich Bay is a gorgeous spot on the south of the magical Gower Peninsula. Its beautiful landscape features dunes, salt marshes and woodland – perfect for exploring on a summer day. You can even take a walk down the two and a half-mile long sandy beach, which is accessible from the village of Oxwich.
5. Clyne Gardens
You may have heard of the spectacular Clyne Gardens as the beautiful parkland is internationally famous for its superb collections of Rhododendrons, Pieris and Enkianthus – perfect for green fingers! The gardens themselves have green flag status and are perfect for escaping the city! You can journey through the bog garden, get lost in the bluebell wood or explore the magnificent Clyne castle!
