Newcastle Student Nightlife: Best Clubs and Bars 2023
New to Newcastle? Or fancy a change of scenery from your usual haunts? We all hit that point mid-term where we’re starting to get bored with our usual go-tos. The magic just isn’t there when you’ve seen the same dance floor every Friday night at 2 am…
Newcastle is one of the best places for party goers. In fact, it got voted the best city in the UK for student nightlife by Which? In 2016 and by Student Hut in 2019. If that doesn’t convince you, how does £1 drinks all night sound?
Escape the London price tag and enjoy a night out on the toon this year. Whether you’re living in Newcastle and want to add to your list, or you’re visiting for the weekend and need some inspiration, we’ve got you covered.
In this blog post, you’ll find our top picks for Newcastle’s student-friendly bars and club nights for every day of the week, plus a few of our extra faves. Enjoy!
Monday
Kandi Island
Lovingly referred to as “your sweet clubbing disco paradise”, this club night is a sugar rush of fun. It’s student and wallet friendly, with £1 entry and £1 shots available. There are four main rooms to choose from, so you can pick n’ mix which tunes you want all night.
The main room is filled with cheesy hits and anthems, like JLS and N Dubz. Head to Room 2 for a dance through the decades: you’ll find a mix of 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s, with student favourites like ABBA and Whitney blasting out. Room 3 is for fans of RnB and hip hop, and Room 4 is for the indie kids. There’s something for everyone!
Tuesday
Waikiki
Not sure what to expect of Waikiki? Think Spring Break and Hawaiian Tropic vibes. It’s spread across four venues, so you’ll get to experience a huge range of music and styles all in one go.
Tickets are £5, but it’s worth it to try out four bars in one night. At House of Smith there’s house and hip hop, head to Floritas for RnB, Tropicalia for garage and Madame Koos for party bombs and singalongs.
Wednesday
Decades
Want to escape 2024 for the evening? Take a trip down memory lane with a night at Decades. You’ll hear classic tunes from the 80s, 90s and 00s. It’s a nostalgia-filled blast from the past and a fun ride through three decades of music. With entry at £3, it’s a great mid-week pick me up.
Dirtz at Pedru
If you’re looking for something a little more contemporary, why not try Dirtz at Pedru. It’s perfect for any fans of house, techno and trance. Split across four rooms, you’ll never get bored of the great mix of DJs and spaces available. There’s even a new techno-disco outdoor terrace.
Thursday
Skint at the Points
Skint is Newcastle’s biggest Thursday night party. If you’re on a budget, the £1 drinks are sure to pull you in – you can do the whole night for a tenner! There’s also a mix of music styles, from anthems to house, singalongs, RnB and indie.
Jungle at Tup Tup
Jungle is perfect for students looking for something a little more sophisticated on a Thursday night. There’s a slightly higher price tag involved, but it’s worth it if you’re into hip hop and RnB. Spread across multiple rooms, it’s Newcastle’s biggest and best night for fans of these genres.
Friday
Feral Fridays at Think Tank
With so many clubs and bars open on the weekend, how do you know where’s student friendly? Feral Fridays is a dedicated student night at Think Tank, just above Digital nightclub. Go here for dance, disco and house beats. This night has been going for over 10 years, so it’s basically a student rite of passage at this point! You’ll likely end up here at some point during your time at university in Newcastle (for better or worse).
Block Party at Greys Club
If you’re looking for something a little less… feral, Block Party is a great alternative to Think Tank. It’s your go-to for disco and house on a Friday night. There’s a balcony bar with drum n’ base and techno available, too.
Saturday
Powerhouse
Powerhouse started as a gay club in the 80s, but now it welcomes people from all walks of life. The most popular night is on a Saturday. PHUCK is spread cross four floors with three rooms of music, and is open until 5 am. There are Co2 cannons, lighting, lasers and more to enhance your party going experience. Dance long into the night at this Newcastle Saturday night staple.
Other Newcastle Student Bars and Nightclubs: Our Top Picks
Soho
Fancy a treb? These drinks are iconic in Newcastle – essentially, they’re made up of three shots of vodka and a mixer. The trebs at Soho are very affordable, so you can sample this Newcastle delicacy without breaking the bank.
Soho was voted the best night club in Newcastle by The Tab in 2020. Enjoy four floors of music, affordable drinks and a good time with lots of fellow students from local universities.
Bijoux
For any fans of Geordie Shore, this is where you need to be. If you’re lucky, you might spot camera crews filming the latest season of the hit reality TV show. Bijoux is one of the biggest bars in Newcastle and is open seven nights a week. If you want to splash the cash, you can get a VIP booth and feel like royalty for the night.
Stack
Head to Stack for a mix of food and drinks. It’s perfect for a couple of bevs before heading out dancing, or if you just want to sample some cocktails. Yolo has a good selection of cocktails, or go to the Havana bar to sample up to 40 different types of rum!
