What is Clearing?
UCAS Clearing is how Universities fill available places on their courses. It also allows for students to find alternative courses and universities if they don’t get, or don’t want, their first choice. Every year thousands of places are allocated this way. It’s not a case of just getting rid of the courses that nobody wants. It can actually represent an exciting new opportunity.
Who can use Clearing?
Any student who has had conditional offers from universities but either didn’t get the expected exam results, or no longer want their firm choice, can use Clearing from results day.
How will I know if I’m in Clearing?
If you’re in Clearing, it will say 'You are in Clearing' or 'Clearing has started’ on your UCAS application status.
When does Clearing open in 2024?
From 5th July to 17th October, you can apply for a course using Clearing if you’re not already holding an offer from a university and the course still has places. You can also apply if you have declined your first-choice option.
How do I apply for Clearing 2024?
First things first - have a think about the course you want to do, consider different subjects - you don't have to stick with your original idea. Also consider what location best suits you. Secondly head to the UCAS website and use their search tool to find courses – it's the only official vacancy list, so it’s the most up-to-date. Before you add your Clearing choice, you need to speak to the university and give them your Clearing number and Personal ID. Ask if they'll accept you, get informal offers over the phone from a variety of universities – then decide which one you want to accept.
What if I can’t find a course I want to do on Clearing?
If you can’t find the course you want - keep checking! Universities will update their courses regularly if there are places later on.

Check the course details – how is it structured each year? What modules make up each year? What are the entry requirements? What accommodation options are there – any you can book without cancellation fees if things change?
What happens if I’m accepted by my Clearing choice?
If the University confirms your place, congrats! You can get on with making plans for your university life and find your perfect student accommodation!
